ActivityDoris Anne Goodchild MBE (1906-1999), artist and calligrapher, was born in London in 1906, the daughter of a draper. She became a pupil-teacher in 1923. Aged 18 she attended Goldsmith's College with a grant from Kent County Council in reward for three years' service in Kent schools. She specialised in art with lettering and was awarded a Teacher's certificate and a Distinction in Advanced Art. She went on to work at Goldsmith's College Practicing School and Bedford Froebel Training College, where she learnt book binding. She worked at Colston's school, Bristol and in 1944 passed her Art Diploma. Subsequently she worked at Hockerill Training College, Essex where she became senior lecturer. She retired to Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland, and concentrated upon her self-published works. In her spare time she travelled widely and painted prolifically. An Honourary Fellowship of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland was conferred upon her in recognition of her fine drawings of buildings. In July 1999 she was awarded and MBE at Holyrood Palace and she died on 19 September 1999.
