Activity'Lines Review' is a periodical which reviews Scottish poetry. It was first published in 1952 as 'a quarterly broadsheet of Poetry in honour of Hugh MacDiarmid's 60th birthday' and was founded by Alan Riddell (b 1927), who edited the magazine from 1952-1955 and from 1962-1967. It celebrated its 100th birthday in 1987. From Spring 1953 the magazine was published by Callum Macdonald (b 1912), literary publisher. Lines Review concentrates on modern Scottish poetry in English, Scots and Scottish Gaelic. Since 1966 financial support has been provided by the Scottish Arts Council. In 1971 Lines Review Editions of poetry and prose have been published in book form.
