ActivityFrancis Campbell Boileau 'Bunty' Cadell (1883-1937), artist, was born on 12 April 1883, the son of an Edinburgh Doctor. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy Preparatory School, the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, and from 1899-1902 he studied painting in Paris. In 1906 he moved with his family to Munich and following the death of his mother in 1906 they returned to Edinburgh. Cadell went to stay with his relative Henry Moubray Cadell at the Grange, West Lothian, for a time. His father died in 1909 and he used his inheritance to obtain a studio in George Street, Edinburgh. In 1912 he founded the Society of Eight, a fixed membership society of like-minded artists with permanent premises. The Society held an annual exhibition. During the First World War, he joined the Royal Scots Guards and in 1915 was posted to the French front. Although based in Edinburgh, Cadell frequently spent time in Iona throughout his life. He died of cancer on 6 December 1937.
