ActivityThe Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society was established before 1735, when the first recorded reference to it was made in the Edinburgh Almanac. On 2 July 1800 the Town Council of Edinburgh granted the Society its Seal of Cause. At the time the motto was changed from 'Long and Far' to 'Far and Sure'. On 30 September 1929 George V (1865-1936) caused the name to change to The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh. The Society originally played on Bruntsfield Links and from 1824-1894 shared Musselburgh golf course with The Honourable Company, Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society and the Musselburgh Golf Club. In 1894 the Society purchased its own course at Barnton, which was formally opened on 3 May 1895. The club house was opened in May 1897. During the Second World War, sheep were grazed on the golf course and four fairways were used for agriculture.
