ActivityRt Rev John Dowden, DD (1840-1910), Bishop of Edinburgh, was born in Cork, the son of John Wheeler Dowden. He was educated at Queen's College Cork and Tinity College Dublin. He married in 1864 and became a priest in 1865. Dowden lectured at Dublin University, 1884-1895. He graduated a BA and was Senior Moderator in Ethics in 1861; MA, 1867; BD, 1874; DD, 1876; Hon LL D (Edinburgh), 1904. Dowden was the Curate of St John's, and then the incumbent of Calry, Sligo. He became the Chaplain to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland 1870-1874. Dowden was the Pantonian Professor of Theology and Canon of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh. His publications included: The Celtic Church in Scotland; The Workmanship of the Prayer Book; The Charters of the Abbey of Inchaffray.
