ActivityThe Grant family of Monymusk traces its lineage to Archibald Grant of Ballentomb, the younger son of James Grant of Grant. Archibald married (pre-1599) Isabella, daughter of Cumming of Erneside. Their great-great-grandson Sir Francis Grant, 1st Bart of Cullen, Buchan (1658-1726), was created Lord Cullen a Baronet of Nova Scotia, 1705 and in 1713 he acquired the estate of Monymusk. He married:1st, in 1694, Jean, daughter of Rev William Meldrum, and they had two sons, Archibald and William; 2nd, in 1708, Sarah, daughter of Rev Alexander Fordyce; and 3rd, in 1718, Agnes, daughter of Henry Hay. He was succeeded by his son, Sir Archibald, 2nd Bart.Sir Archibald, 2nd Bart (1696-1778), became an advocate in 1714, and MP for Aberdeen, 1722-1732. He married:1st, in 1717, Anne, daughter of James Hamilton of Pencaitland, and they had two daughters who died young; 2nd, in 1731, Anne, daughter of Charles Potts of Castleton, they had a son, Sir Archibald, 3rd Bart; 3rd, in 1751, Elizabeth Clark (d 1759), the widow of Dr James Callander of Jamaica; and 4th, in 1770, Jane (d 1788), widow of Andrew Millar of London.Sir Archibald's brother, William (d 1764), became an advocate, 1722, and was Lord Advocate, 1746-1754. He was MP for Elgin, 1747 and was appointed Lord of Session, Lord Prestongrange, 1754. He married Grizel, daughter of Rev Millar, and they had three daughters.
