ActivityProfessor Andrew Dewar Gibb (1888-1974), professor of law and QC, was the son of Dr W F Gibb. He was educated at Glenalmond and Glasgow University, where he was awarded an LLB with distinction, 1913. He was called to the Scottish Bar, 1914 and the English Bar, 1917. Gibb served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers during the First World War, and he married Margaret Isabel Downie, 1923. Professor Gibb lectured on English Law at Edinburgh University, 1929 and on Scottish Law at Cambridge University, 1931. He was awarded an Hon LLD from Aberdeen and Glasgow and was Regius Professor of Law, Glasgow University, 1934-1958. Gibb stood for Hamilton, 1924, Greenock, 1929, and the Scottish Universities, 1935, 1936 and 1938, and was the Chairman of the Scottish National Party, 1936-1940; Chairman of the Saltire Society, 1955-1957; and President of the Scottish Covenant Association, 1957. His publications include: Scottish Judicial Dictionary; Scotland in Eclipse; and Scotland Resurgent.
