Person NamePiobaireachd Society; 1903-
ActivityThe Piobaireachd Society was formed in 1903 to encourage the study and playing of piobaireachd, the classical music of the Highland bagpipe. Piobaireachd or Ceol Mor (the Grand Music) is composed to take advantage of the continuous and constant volume of the bagpipe. Quick marches, strathspeys and reels are what is called Ceol Beag (the small or lesser music). So far they have published 15 books based on the available manuscripts; the 'Kilberry Book of Ceol Mor' by Archibald Campbell, which contains some of the better-known tunes; and a book of modern canntaireachd. They also publish important books and manuscripts, with explanatory notes. The society has appointed teachers and trains judges.
