ActivityWilliam Laughton Lorimer (1885-1967), professor of Greek, was the son of the Rev Robert Lorimer and Isabella Lockhart of Mains and Strathmartine, Angus. Lorimer was educated at Dundee High School, Fettes College, Edinburgh and Trinity College, Oxford, where he was appointed assistant and lecturer in Greek, 1910-1929. From 1929-1953 he was reader in Latin at the University College, Dundee and then Professor of Greek at the University of St Andrews, 1953-1955. He married Marion Rose Gordon in 1915. Lorimer was awarded an MA Oxon and an LLD from St Andrews University, he was chairman of the Classical Association of Scoltand, 1951-1953, chairman of the Executive Council and a member of the Editorial Committee of the Scottish National Dictionary, and in 1953 became a Fellow of the British Academy. Lorimer's publications include 'Aristotelis qui fertur Libelius de Mundo' (Paris, 1933) and articles and reviews in 'Classical Review'.
