Person NameElphinstone family; family
ActivityThe Elphinstone family of Lopness, Orkney and Sowerby, Cumberland has some claim to the titles and dignities of Lord Balmerino. The title was first taken by the Hon James Elphinstone, third son of Robert, 3rd Lord Elphinstone, who was appointed keeper of Holyroodhouse and made Lord Balmerinoch in 1603. The title died out with Arthur, 6th Lord Balmerino and 5th Lord Coupar (1688-) who succeeded to the titles on the death of his brother in 1746. That same year, after the Battle of Culloden, he was arrested and executed, and his lands and titles forfeited. He and his wife Margaret, daughter of Captain John Chambers, had no children and the male line of this branch of the Elphinstone family became extinct.
