ActivityDavid Macbeth Sutherland, MC RSA LLD (1883-1973), artist, was born in Wick, Caithness-shire and educated at Pultneytown Academy, Wick and studied art at the Royal Institution, Edinburgh. He was awarded the Carnegie travelling scholarship, and studied in Paris and Madrid. Sutherland then gained a post at the Edinburgh College of Art. He married Dorothy Johnstone in 1924. During the Second World War he served as a Captain in the Royal Scots Regiment and was awarded an MC and was mentioned in dispatches. Sutherland became Principal of Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen and retired in 1948. He was awarded an Hon LLD by Aberdeen in 1953, and was a frequent exhibitor in the principal Scottish art exhibitions.
