ActivityThe Clarsach (a type of harp) is the oldest instrument of Scotland, with examples from the 15th and 16th century held by the National Museum of Scotland. Playing of the Clarsach greatly declined during the 18th century and much of the music was lost. The Clarsach Society (Comunn na Clarsaich), which was founded c 1931, now has 11 branches throughout Scotland and the UK. It aims to promote the playing of the instrument and provides an instrument hire service; maintains a list of teachers; sells music; and organises events like the annual 'Edinburgh Harp Festival'. The Edinburgh branch has a harp orchestra of more than 30 players.
