ActivityAlasdair James Gray (b 1934), writer and painter, was born in Glasgow and educated at Glasgow School of Art, 1957. He was artist-recorder for the People's Palace Museum, Glasgow, 1977 and writer-in-residence at the University of Glasgow, 1977-1979. Since 1979 he has worked as a freelance painter and maker of books. In 1995 he created a mural for Abbots House Local History Museum, Dunfermline. Gray has also published more than 15 novels and received awards from the Saltire Society, 1982 and the Whitbread Award, 1992. He also holds membership of several organisations which support nuclear disarmament and the rights of coal miners.
