ActivityVerney Lovett Cameron (1844-1894), explorer, entered the navy in 1857, becoming a midshipman, 1860 and lieutenant, 1865. He was in the Abyssinian campaign, 1868 and was involved inh the suppression of the slave trade. Cameron led the unsuccessful expedition by the Royal Geographical Society, in 1873, to rescue David Livingstone. He was made commander and C B, 1876, awarded a RGS gold medal and an honorary DCL Oxford. Cameron retired from the navy in 1883 and wrote about his adventures and travels.
