ActivityJohn McVie was born in 1888 the son of John McVie and Thomasina McCracken Crocker. He was educated at Stair Public School, Ayr Academy, and Edinburgh University. McVie qualified as a solicitor in 1911 and in the same year entered Register House in Edinburgh. Between 1909 and 1919 he also served in the Royal Scots. In 1946 he was made Depute Keeper and from 1949 to 1957 was Keeper of the Registers of Scotland. McVie was interested in Robert Burns and served as President of the Burns Federation. During the 1950s and 1960s he published several articles and other works about Burns. He was also President of the Scottish National Dictionary Association and was created OBE in 1954. McVie was married and had two sons and a daughter. He died in 1967.
