ActivityGeorge Sutherland Fraser was born on 8 November 1915 in Glasgow but brought up in Aberdeen where his father was Town Clerk. He graduated from the University of St Andrews in 1937 and secured a post as a journalist with the Aberdeen 'Press and Journal'. During the Second World War he served in the Middle East then returned to work as a journalist and critic contributing articles to publications including the 'Times Literary Supplement'. From 1959 to 1979 he lectured at Leicester University but is best known for his poetry and works of literary criticism. His collections of poems, including 'Home Town Elegy' (1944) and 'Conditions' (1969), frequently reflect a sense of exile from Scotland and a melancholy about the passing of life. Fraser died on 3 January 1980.
