ActivityWilliam Sim was born in Leith in 1843 the son of Alexander Sim. He attended the Edinburgh School of Arts and Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh, then studied science at Heidelberg University in around 1863. Returning to Scotland he became a colour manufacturer and erected a colour works in 1867. Known for a while as Sim & Barclay, the firm's name was later changed to William Sim & Sons. Sim married Alice Ann Smith daughter of William Smith, merchant, in 1873. The firm was active to at least 1925.
