Activity | Heriot's Benefit Society, Edinburgh, was founded on 28 June 1815 as a friendly society with the intention of helping members who fell upon hard times. Members paid subscriptions and were eligible for three types of benefit: funeral payments; annuities; and sickness payments. At first membership was restricted to former pupils of George Heriot's Hospital, but later the Society was open to everyone. The Society was dissolved in 1964 due to lack of members. |
