ActivityJohn Hutton Balfour-Browne was born in Scotland in 1845 the son of Dr W. A. F. Browne. Educated at Edinburgh University he became a barrister in 1870. In 1874 he was appointed Registrar and Secretary to the Railway Commission and was based in London. He was appointed a KC in 1885 and became a Bencher of Middle Temple in 1890. Balfour-Browne had some interest in politics and, as a Conservative, contested Dumfriesshire in 1906 and East Bradford in 1910. A keen writer, he published several articles on various aspects of the law as well as on history and politics. He also wrote several, unpublished, novels. He was married to Caroline Lush in 1874 and they had two sons and a daughter. He died in 1921.
