ActivityMajor-General Granville Egerton was born in 1859, the eldest son of Arthur Frederick Egerton (1829-1928) who was the 4th son of Francis Egerton (1800-1857), 1st Earl of Ellesmere. He was educated at Charterhouse and Sandhurst and joined the 72nd Highlanders in 1879 serving with them, and later with the Seaforth Highlanders, in the Afghan War where he distinguished himself and was severely wounded, in Egypt, Crete and the Sudan. Egerton commanded the 1st Yorkshire Regiment in 1903 and was commandant at the Hythe School of Musketry from 1907 to 1909 after which he served in Malta and with the Lowland Division. He was made Major-General in 1912 and retired in 1919 but was Colonel with the Highland Infantry from 1921-1929. He lived in Edinburgh and died in 1951.
