ActivityWilliam McTaggart was born in 1835 in Aros, Campbeltown, Argyll. He attended the county school where he developed an interest in drawing which continued when, at the age of twelve, he was apprenticed to a doctor's dispensary in Campbeltown. In 1852 he went to Glasgow where he was encouraged by Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882) then later returned to Edinburgh to the Trustees' Academy, studying under Robert Scott Lauder (1803-1869). He became well known as a painter of seascapes then developed an interest in landscape painting, moving to Broomieknowe, Lasswade, Midlothian to find inspiration. A quiet, modest man, he was well respected by fellow artists and was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1859 and as Acadeician in 1870. McTaggart died at his home in 1910.
