ActivityArthur Birnie was born in Edinburgh in 1890 and was educated at George Heriot's school and Edinburgh University, graduating with a double first in history and economics. He spent a year at Balliol College, Oxford before joining the RAMC in 1915. In 1919 he was appointed lecturer in Economic History at the University of Aberdeen and in 1925 transferred to the University of Edinburgh where he remained until 1956. Birnie died in 1962 and his wife, Yvonne Louise, who he had met in France during the First World War, died in 1988.
