ActivityProfessor Sir Robert Grieve was born in 1910 and educated at North Kelvinside School, Glasgow and the Royal College of Science and Technology, Glasgow. He worked in local government between 1927 and 1944 and in the Civil Service from 1946 to 1954. Grieve was appointed Chief Planner at the Scottish Office in 1960 then became Professor of Town and Regional Planning at Glasgow University in 1964, a post he held for ten years. In recognition of his professional career and his work on committees such as the Highlands and Islands Development Board he was knighted in 1969 and awarded honorary degrees from Heriot-Watt and the University of Strathclyde.
