ActivityThe National Trust was founded in 1895 to acquire and protect threatened coastline, countryside and buildings. Carlyle's House, Chelsea, is one of the Trust's properties. It was the home of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) and his wife Jane (1801-1866): Carlyle lived there for some 47 years until his death in 1881. Much of the original d├ęcor and furniture and many of the Carlyle's pictures, portraits and books are all still in place, along with some original documents.
