ActivityThomas Ian Rae was born in 1926 in Norwich. He was educated at Hawick High School and Balliol College, Oxford, then at St Andrew's University. He served in the Royal Navy (1944-1947) then, in 1951, secured a post as assistant lecturer in history at Glasgow University. From 1952 to 1955 he was assistant lecturer in Medieval History at St Andrew's then took the post of Assistant Keeper, Manuscripts, at the National Library of Scotland, becoming Keeper in 1972. Rae's interest in history extended beyond the workplace: he was variously Secretary of the Scottish History Society, Chairman of the Company of Scottish History, and Chairman of the Scottish Records Association from 1969 to 1976; and published on Scottish and local history.
