ActivityThe Scottish National Party was founded in 1934 by the merger of the National Party of Scotland and the Scottish Party. It won its first Westminster seat in a by-election in 1945 and has had continuous parliamentary representation since 1967. A left-of-centre political party founded on social democratic principles the SNP is primarily committed to securing Scottish independence. When the first elections were held for the devolved Scottish Parliament in 1999, the party returned a total number of 35 Members of the Scottish Parliament and became the official opposition in the Scottish Parliament.
