Activity | Buchan Field Club was founded around 1887 to stimulate and encourage interest in a variety of scholarly subjects in the North East of Scotland. Members included such notable people as Sir J. Arthur Thomson (1861-1933), the naturalist, John Gray, John Malcolm Bulloch, theatre critic, and Dr. David Rorie. The papers presented to the Club or published in its ‘Transactions’ covered a very broad variety of interests, including church history, literature, geography, geology, anthropology, palaeontology, architecture, and ornithology. The Club made frequent excursions in the summer to sites of interest, usually historic monuments, after which members would bring their particular expertise to bear on the discoveries made there. |
