ActivityTurnpike roads were roads funded by the collection of tolls at toll bars or turnpikes, as they were also known. Local landowners would obtain an act of parliament for specific roads (either existing or proposed). The trustees would be empowered to borrow money, impose tolls, maintain roads and build new ones. The first such act in Scotland was in 1713 but they did not become widespread until the 1750s. A General Turnpike Act in 1831 (1 & 2 Will. IV, c.43) standardised the powers and functions of turnpike trusts. They were abolished between 1878 and 1883 when the Roads and Bridges (Scotland) Act 1878 (41 & 42 Vict., c.51) came into force. This Act replaced all the former highway authorities in landward areas, including the turnpike trusts, with a single road trust for each county. Several counties, including Aberdeenshire in around 1865, had already formed county road trusts and abolished tolls prior to the 1878 Act.Aberdeen turnpike roads were as follows (dates are opening dates): Alford, 1810; Ballater, 1859; Boyndlie (from Fraserburgh towards Banff), 1816; Bridge of Dee, 1821; Buchan or Banff & Macduff (towards Peterhead and Fraserburgh), 1821; Charlestown, 1802; Corgarff, 1833; Cortiebrae (Cortybrae) or Fraserburgh (from Peterhead to Cortybrae), 1813; Deeside, 1798; Echt and Midmar, 1807; Ellon, Peterhead and Fraserburgh, 1799; Fyvie, 1806; Gardensmill, 1803; Huntly, 1804; Insch and West Foudland (towards Huntly), 1823; Inverurie, 1800; Inverurie and Forgue, 1839; Kemnay, 1855; Kennethmont, 1833; Kintore and Alford or Monymusk, 1826; Longside (from Peterhead towards Banff), 1807; Newburgh, 1804; New Pitsligo, 1810; Oldmeldrum, 1803; Raemoir and Lumphanan or Garlogie and Kincardine, 1825; Rhynie (from Huntly towards Alford), 1825; Sheelagreen, 1835; Skene, 1803; Strathdon or Donside, 1826; Strichen, 1837; Strichen and Fraserburgh, 1840; Tarland (from Drumlasie), 1822; Turriff (from Fyvie to Banff by Turriff), 1802; Udny, 1828.
