Person NameFrancis Webster and Son Limited; 1795-1992
ActivityThe firm was established in 1795, although the weaving activities of the family can be traced to 1758. During the nineteenth century production was concentrated on sailcloth and yarn for seaming cloth, for an expanding home and overseas market. Since the decline in sailing vessels, the production of tarpaulins for rail and road haulage has been developed, although pleasure sailing still provided the company with an outlet for its famous sailcloth. In 1933, the two branches of the firm, Francis Webster and Son and the Netherward Spinning and Weaving Co., were incorporated as Francis Webster and Sons Ltd. The company went into liquidation in 1992.
