ActivityThe Montrose Society was founded in 1956 as a meeting point for local people interested in the development of the town and its historical background. It plays an active role in planning and conservation matters within Montrose. The Society was successful in establishing and later extending the Montrose Conservation Area. In 1989 it instituted a Civic Awards scheme for new buildings and renovations. The society holds monthly meetings during the winter when speakers talk on topics related to the town’s heritage. Over the years the Society has been the recipient of many gifts of historic material such as photographs, research notes, the J G Low and Jock Smith collections.
