ActivityIn the reign of King David II, Walter Maule granted a charter of the lands of Carnegie in the barony of Panmure, County of Forfar, to John Balinhard who then took the surname Carnegie. The Carnegie lands expanded throughout the centuries. David Carnegie was created Lord Carnegie of Kinnaird in 1616 and in 1633 he was elevated to the Earldom of Southesk, an honour which expired under the attainder of the 5th Earl in 1715. The Northesk family continued with David’s brother John who became Earl of Northesk after the restoration in 1660.
