ActivityThe National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was founded in 1824 by lifeboatman Sir William Hillary (1771 - 1847) as a co-ordinating body for all the lifeboat associations which were already in existence. The Montrose year book of 1886 states that three boats operated out of the station and 217 lives had been saved by the crews between 1869 and 1886.
