ActivityThe Reverend Joseph Hay was the third son of the Reverend James Hay, minister of the United Associate Congregation in Alyth. He attended Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities and gained a Master of Arts degree before commencing his divinity studies in 1817. He was licensed to preach by the United Associate Presbytery in 1821 and provided pulpit supply for them. On 15 October he was called to the North Grimsby Street congregation in Arbroath and remained there all of his life. He was a popular preacher and a dedicated pastor. His attentions were particularly directed towards the young people in his congregation. His ministry continued until 1854 when his health began to break down. He married Helen Carswell and had a large family.
