Person NameArbroath Abbey; 1178-1560
ActivityArbroath Abbey was founded by William the Lion (1165 - 1214) in 1178 and dedicated to his late friend St Thomas a Becket. It was populated by reformed Tironensian monks of the Benedictine Order and was generously endowed by William. He himself is buried there. The Beaton family were prominent amongst the abbey officials in the sixteenth century, but after the Reformation the abbey and its lands became Hamilton property and much of the stone was used for building. The ruins briefly housed the Stone of Destiny in 1951 before it was returned to Westminster Abbey. Now more remains of the abbey church than of the rest of the abbey buildings.
