ActivityIn 1870, a meeting of householders in Forfar was held under the terms of the Public Libraries Act of 1867 (30 and 31 Victoria cap 37) to discuss the adoption of the Act. The Act was adopted in 1870 and the library was set up shortly after. Forfar was the third town in Scotland to adopt the Act. The Town Council gave £100 to establish the library's collection and other local benefactors were generous. The Free Library was initially housed in the Burgh Court room in the Town House. In 1898, the library moved into the newly built Meffan Institute . In 1975 it was transferred to Angus District Council Libraries and Museums Service.
