ActivityThe National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was founded in 1824 by lifeboatman Sir William Hillary (1771 - 1847) as a co-ordinating body for all the lifeboat associations which were already in existence. Montrose has had a lifeboat since 1800. In 1818 responsibility for the lifeboat was transferred to Montrose Town Council who put it in the care of the Harbour Lights Committee. The 1837 Harbour Act granted the Harbour Trust authority over the whole estuary, including the lifeboat. In 1839 The Harbour Trust handed over the lifeboat and all of its apparatus to the Montrose Lifeboat Establishment. Thirty years later in 1869 the station was put under the care of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
