Person NameForfar Literary Institute; 1891-
ActivityThe former Forfar Literary Society became the Forfar Literary Institute on 6 February 1891. The aim of the Institute was to provide for the social welfare and mutual improvement of its members through the provision of a Reading Room, a Recreation Room, a weekly literary meeting during winter months, and lectures. Lectures covered a wide selection of topics from foreign wildlife to balloon trips made by Miss Gertrude Bacon, Aeronaut and Lecturer. The Institute received money from the late Mrs Elizabeth Whyte Roberts or Wright, who left money to cover part of the cost of a series of lectures and for Burns Concerts which were to be held annually. The Forfar Literary Institute is still in existence.
