ActivityAlistair MacTavish Dunnett was born in 1908 and attended schools in Glasgow until he joined the Commercial Bank of Scotland in 1925. He entered journalism around 1933. He was Chief Press Officer to the Secretary of State for Scotland from 1940 to 1946, edited the 'Daily Record' from 1946 to 1955, and from 1956 edited 'The Scotsman' until his retirement in 1972. He held a number of directorships and board seats of organisations chiefly to do with publishing and the arts, and he himself published several books with the theme of Scottish outdoor activities. At least one of these was written in collaboration with his wife, the author Dorothy Dunnett (nee Halliday) whom he married in 1946. They had two sons. He was knighted in 1995, and died in 1998.
