ActivityErnest Mann was born in Forfar in 1908 and held jobs as farm labourer, grocer, Army motorcycle despatch rider (during the Second World War) and postman before becoming chief librarian in Forfar in 1947. He held the post from then until his retirement in 1975, during which time he built up a significant collection of books on Angus under the Ewing Bequest. He was a keen local historian, instrumental in the establishment of the Forfar and District Historical Society and writer of several local history books. He was also a railway enthusiast, angler, and amateur ornithologist, founding the Strathmore Angling Improvement Association (in 1948) and helping to found the Rescobie Loch Development Association. He was made Forfar Citizen of the Year in 1990.
