ActivityAlexander Lowson, son of John Lowson and Ann Jolly, was born 14 February 1841 and died 8 February 1903. He was a prominent figure in Forfar affairs and literature. His publications include 'A Portrait Gallery of Forfar Notables'; 'John Guidfellow', a historical novel on district themes; 'Tales, Legends and Traditions of Forfar', and numerous newspaper and magazine articles. He also attempted to start a national magazine, 'Caledonia'. In addition, he was president of the Forfar Burns Club, and author of 'Burns' Birthday Songs'. His epitaph describes him as 'A man of rare qualities of mind and heart, a staunch friend, and a devoted lover of his native town and its people. Slave to no sect, who took no private road, but looked through nature up to nature's God'.
