Activity | The Mortification was originally established in the mid 1600s with 8,000 merks left by William Strang and Robert Strang, natives of Forfar and merchants in Stockholm, to the poor of Forfar. The managers of the mortification purchased land to the value of 9,000 merks and the shortfall was made up by the Kirk Session. In 1837 due to a trade slump the number of poor claiming assistance multiplied, requiring the managers to take out a loan to cover excess expenditure. |
