ActivityThe Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) was founded in 1847 and is the oldest teaching union in the world. A Royal Charter was granted to the EIS by Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Empress of India (1819 - 1901), which allowed the union to confer the degree of 'Fellow of the Institute' amongst other privileges. The EIS is the only union which has this power. Membership at the time the charter was granted was over 1,800 and in 2000 the membership is over 51,000.The aim of the union was to promote higher standards in educations throughout Scotland and over the years had developed the function of improving the working conditions and pay of teachers. It has been affiliated to the Scottish Trades Union Congress, the Trades Union Congress and Education International since the 1970s.
