ActivityUnder an Act of Parliament of 1786 (26 Geo III c.101), Commissioners for Northern Lighthouses were appointed for Scotland and by 1800 plans were under way to build the Bell Rock Lighthouse off the east coast of Scotland. In 1806, an Act (46 Geo III c.132) was passed to permit the building of the Lighthouse, and the first light was shown on 1 February 1811. The design and construction of the Lighthouse has long been thought to have been the responsibility of Robert Stevenson (1772 - 1850; grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, author) but there is a long-running dispute as to whether this is actually the case.
