ActivityThe Society was instituted on 10th. October 1856, and the last evidence of its existence is in October 1857. The Society dispensed with rules, and resolved to be guided 'by principles of honour'. It was essentially a debating society, meeting each week at the Vennel School to debate a pre-arranged subject. Subjects varied widely, from 'Is woman mentally inferior to man?' (they decided not) to 'Is the miser or the spendthrift the more useful member of society?' (they chose the miser).
