ActivityJohn Riddell (1785-1862), peerage lawyer, was the son of Henry Riddell of Little Govan and Anne Glassford. Riddell was called to the bar in 1807 and specialised in genealogy and Scottish peerage law. He did not marry. Riddell's publications include, 'The Saltfoot Controversy, with a Reply' (1818); ‘Remarks upon Scottish Peerage Law, with special Reference to the Case of the Earldom of Devon' (1833); ‘Inquiry into the Law and Practice in Scottish Peerages before and after the Union, involving the Questions of Jurisdiction and Forfeitures; with an Exposition of our original Consistorial Law' (1842).
