Person NameBurgh of Leslie; 1458-1975
ActivityLeslie (originally known as Fetykil) was made a burgh of barony by George, Earl of Rothes in 1458. In 1865 Leslie became a police burgh by adopting the General Police and Improvement (Scotland) Act, 1862. The powers of the new Police Commissioners over the town's commonty were disputed by the 'Barony Council' which had represented the old burgh of barony. The legal dispute was finally settled in 1904 by a court ruling in favour of the Police Commissioners. Leslie Town Council was abolished in 1975 under the Local government (Scotland) Act 1973,(c.65). Its powers were assumed by Fife Regional Council and Kirkcaldy District Council. These in turn were replaced by Fife Council in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 (c.39).
