ActivityThe Earl of Wemyss made Methil a burgh of barony in 1662. In 1891 the police burgh of Buckhaven, Methil and Innerleven was created. Industries included salt production and coal mining. The dock was enlarged in the late nineteenth century and Methil become the main port for the Fife coalfield. In 1881 the population of Buckhaven and Methil was 4,207 by 1951 it had risen to 20,152. Buckhaven and Methil Town Council was abolished in 1975 under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. Its powers were assumed by Fife Regional Council and Kirkcaldy District Council.
