ActivityWilliam Thomson was born at Newton of Lathrisk Farm near Freuchie, Fife, in 1944 or 1945. He had problems reading and writing at school. He left school aged 15 and worked in various manual jobs. He has lived in Glenrothes since 1972. Aged 48 he attended adult basic education classes to learn to read and write. He found out that he was dyslexic and that he also suffers from scotopic sensitivity syndrome (which makes it difficult for him to see black text on white paper). Bill Thomson has won several awards for adult learning and writes poetry and short stories. In 1998 he was the Scottish Adult learner of the year and was runner up in the United Kingdom award. In 2000 he was runner up in the Sunday Daily Mail's Great Scot of the Year competition.
