Activity | The town was made into a burgh of barony in 1474 in favour of Colin, 1st Earl of Argyll and Lord High Chancellor of Scotland. Charles I erected it into a royal burgh in 1648. In the 19th century it was governed by a provost, 2 baillies, and 9 other councillors who also served as the police commissioners.
