ActivityJohn Murray (1808-1892), publisher, was the son of John Murray (1778-1843) and Anne Elliot. He was educated at Charterhouse and Edinburgh University, 1827. He then spent some time travelling in Europe and gathered material for a series of travel guides. His first four were written by himself, he then enlisted other experts to write guides for Spain, Egypt and North Italy. From 1830 he assisted his father in the family firm, taking over in 1843. He married Marion Smith, 1847 and they had two sons and two daughters. He was a magistrate for Surrey, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a member of the Athenaeum Club. Murray's personal publications include: 'Holland, Belgium, and the Rhine' (1836); 'France'; 'South Germany'; and 'Switzerland'. He also published anonymously, 'Scepticism in Geology' (1877).
